Are you ready to make a significant impact on your community and the environment? As a Grade I Operator, you will assist in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of our wastewater treatment process. This position operates sewage treatment, sludge processing, and disposal equipment in wastewater (sewage) treatment plant to control flow and processing of sewage.   Performs related work as required according to City practices and procedures, as well as state and federal regulations. 

Representative List of Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  The list is not intended to be all-inclusive nor exclusive, but is intended to provide examples of typical duties performed.

  • Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow of sewage.
  • Ensures equipment is working properly. Cleans and maintains clarifiers, filters, UVs and rotors. 
  • Repairs broken sewer lines and frees obstructions. 
  • Performs sewer inspections and marks sewer mains and laterals. 
  • Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and tests results to determine load requirements. 
  • Operates pumps, engines, and generators to control flow of sewage through filtering, settling, aeration, and sludge digestion processes. 
  • Collects sewage samples and conducts laboratory tests to ensure compliance with ADEM permit.  Prepares samples for outside testing. 
  • Calibrates Oxygen and PH meters. 
  • Checks lift station pump run times and alarms to ensure proper functioning.    
  • Cuts grass and sprays weeds at lift stations and treatment plant as needed. 
  • Operates and maintains mobile generators and dry prime pumps. 
  • Establishes and maintains effective work relationships with others.

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED.

Certificates and Licenses: 

  • Valid Alabama Driver’s License
  • Grade II Wastewater Certification must be obtained within 12 months from date of hire.

Compensation: Compensation for this position is $40,309.00 - $54,937.00, based on education and experience. Applicant must also satisfactorily pass a background check and pre-employment drug screen after receiving conditional offer of employment.
