[ARCHIVED] Severe Weather Expected Overnight

Storm clouds

Tornado threat 1129A strong storm system is expected to move into Alabama this evening, bringing with it a threat of severe storms and localized flooding in the overnight hours. The main threats are tornadoes, damaging straight-line winds of 70-80mph, large hail (golf ball size), and heavy rain that could result in localized flooding. As of 10:30 am this morning, Shelby County is in the slight risk area, with counties to the west and north in the enhanced and moderate risk areas. Keep in mind mother nature doesn't know where meteorologists have drawn lines, so regardless of what "color" risk/threat Pelham is in, everyone should be prepared.

Here are the basics:

  • Have multiple ways to receive alerts. The best way is a NOAA Weather Radio. Be sure Wireless Emergency Alerts are enabled on your phone. Sign up for ShelbyALerts from the Shelby County EMA. Finally, download the weather app of your preferred local news station.
  • Make sure your phone is charged or charging and that Do Not Disturb is turned off when we expect severe weather overnight.
  • Have a safety plan that everyone in your house knows. The safest place in your home to take shelter in a tornado warning is the lowest floor in an interior room, away from windows. In that safe place, you should have helmets for everyone, hard-soled shoes, a flashlight, and a whistle.
  • Mobile homes are not safe during severe weather. Go to the nearest shelter or business that is open 24/7 that can provide shelter. Pelham Park Middle School is the designated shelter in the city.
  • Be sure you're following the City's official social media channels (Facebook, Twitter) for the latest on the weather and when the shelter will officially open, and/or sign up for weather alerts from the City.
  • Be a hero. Keep family/friends up-to-date on the weather situation where they are.
